Acupuncture is an essential component of traditional Chinese medicine typically used to treat pain. In traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture is used as a technique for “balancing the flow of energy or life force” — called Chi or Qi. Chinese practitioners believe your life force flows through pathways — called meridians — in your body. Acupuncture uses very thin needles inserted at specific points along the meridians to rebalance your energy flow. Western practitioners typically use acupuncture points to stimulate muscles, nerves, and connective tissue. Increasingly, acupuncture is used for stress management and overall wellness. Acupuncture can be used to stimulate your body’s natural painkillers.

What to Expect During Acupuncture

Acupuncture points are situated throughout the body. The type of treatment you need dictates which and how many of these points will be used. Our acupuncturist will review your treatment with you letting you know where the needles will be inserted and whether you will need to remove any clothes. A gown, sheet, or towel will be provided if needed. Treatment will be done on a comfortable, padded table.

Acupuncture's 3 Steps

  1. Needle insertion. Very thin acupuncture needles will be inserted at strategic points on your body. The needles normally cause very little discomfort. Many people don’t even feel them being inserted. A typical treatment uses between 5 to 20 needles.
  2. Needle manipulation. Your acupuncturist may gently move or twirl the needles or apply heat or mild electrical pulses to the needles.
  3. Needle removal. Typically, the acupuncture needles remain in place for 10 to 20 minutes. Turning that time you lie still and relax. When the needles are removed there is typically no discomfort.
